Softwood and hardwood decking are both types that can give a natural character to any outdoor area. They can be sanded and oiled if damaged, but with proper maintenance, your new garden construction can last for many years. Softwood decking is made from coniferous, evergreen trees such as pine or spruce. About 80% of the world’s timber is softwood. Scandinavia and Russia grow a huge amount of softwood trees. To use softwood decking outside, it must be suitably pressure treated with preservatives, to protect it from fungal and insect decay in addition to deterioration from the environment.
Due to availability, cost effectiveness and ease of installation, around 90% of decks are made from softwood decking. Hardwood decking tends to be more expensive and requires more care to work with, though it is available in a range of attractive colours.

Common decking issues
The most common decking issue are moss, mould or algae, which can make wooden decking slippery and dangerous, reduce the life of the wood and result in a poor aesthetic.
When wooden decking becomes slippery, especially when damp or wet, it’s usually down to mould, algae or some other form of biological growth on the surface of the deck. Jet washing will remove the surface matter but will leave mould spores in the surface of the deck timbers. Left untreated and in the right conditions, these will likely grow back quickly.
